1991 was a special year ― the year when HKUST was officially born. For the first time in our city’s history, we celebrate a research university devoted to the development of science, technology, engineering, management and business studies.

The story of HKUST was a miracle since the very beginning. We opened our doors to the first class of students with a beautiful and full-fledged campus - less than two years after the construction contract was awarded.

With its pioneering spirit, HKUST has turned itself into a premiere university with top-notch research capabilities and high quality undergraduate and postgraduate education. We are destined to help the society enrich itself and advance on all fronts.

Twenty years have come to pass, and HKUST is now recognized as one of the world’s top 50 universities, and Asia’s no. 1. Our Science School has become first in Hong Kong, our Engineering School first in China and our School of Humanities and Social Science first in Asia. Our joint EMBA program has been ranked no. 1 in the world, three times in the past four years. Ranking, however, is only part of the story.

Most importantly, we have achieved our research mission. We have cemented our global position as a research university and have spearheaded the research culture in Hong Kong and neighboring regions.

And we make these claims on good grounds: we have achieved research breakthrough in a number of areas ranging from Nanotechnology to Wireless Communication, Biotechnology, Business and Environmental Sciences. We have nurtured a research culture not only among faculty members and postgraduate students but also among our undergraduate students, many of them first and second year students. We have become the first choice for the largest number of PhD candidates from top-notch overseas institutions coming to Hong Kong with scholarships. In so doing, we have contributed to the knowledge economy of Hong Kong and the education hub in Asia.

The name “Miracle University” is on people’s lips. Younger technological universities look to us for the architecture of success. With a history of merely two decades, we have become the success story which research universities on the Mainland and from as far as the Middle East look to for insights and experience sharing.

Our miracle has been made possible by our people. It is the energy and dedication of our accomplished and forward-looking faculty and staff, students and alumni, and the ardent support of our donors and members of the community, that have propelled us into the highest ranks of global excellence.

Our miracle continues. As we celebrate our 20 years of success, we are creating even greater synergies and miracles.
